Report & Results of the 2022 event
In 2019, South Wales LDWA Group reported that the last ever Offa’s Twisted Wye Kanter had just been held. The original format had been to host a winter event, but the volume of forestry work that routinely took place in winter combined with a lack of transparency on where the work was to take place meant that planning a winter event was impossible due to late footpath closures. However, an opportunity arose in late 2021 to reintroduce the kanter as part of the Chepstow Walking Festival in spring due to the fact that the bird nesting season pauses forestry work.
The date of the event was largely dictated by the Chepstow Walking Festival dates and in consultation with our partners at Chepstow Walkers Are Welcome, it was decided that after a week’s walking activities, the kanter would be the concluding event.
127 people entered and it was clear to see that the vast majority were not LDWA members. This meant that the South Wales Group was able to introduce many walkers from the wider walking community to the LDWA. 99 people attended on the day and were treated to a fantastic spring day in the Wye Valley. The bluebells and wild garlic were in perfect condition and with a slight cooling breeze, the walking temperature was ideal.
As with all LDWA challenge events, the kanter could only be held because of the volunteers who gave up their time to ensure the event was a success. So, thank you to:
Andrew Clabon | Guido Szmocki | Nisha Szmocki | Enrique Santafe |
Simon Pickering | Stuart Bain | Jamie Lewis | Valmai Lewis |
Jason Winney | Tony Alcock | Ferne Davis | Norma Lloyd |
Gill Morgan | Ange Williams |
The South Wales LDWA Group’s next challenge walk is ‘Three Circles Of Monmouth’ on 27.08.22. Entries can be made at: https://www.sientries.co.uk/event.php?elid=Y&event_id=9535

I know the Wye Valley Walk and Offa’s Dyke Path between Tintern and Brocksweir quite well, but the 22 mile route avoided the obvious, and took us on paths I’d never walked before (but will again in the future)
A massive shout out to everyone involved in organising today’s Kanter, and to all those who gave up their day (and missed some cracking weather). We had a brilliant time on the 22 mile route.
The Bakewell slices were to die for, compliments to the baker and thank you for all the replenishment!
Thank you everyone, we had a fantastic day.
Such a well-run superb walk – big thanks xx
Excellent day! Thanks to you all!
Lush day, thank you so much for having us!
Massive thanks to everyone at South Wales LDWA Group who were involved in putting on Offa’s Twisted Wye Kanter today. A lovely route, perfect weather, and the catering at the end made up for the lack of the usual checkpoint hospitality!
