Valleys 100 Section 9 - Butetown to Tredegar
Section 9 of The Valleys Hundred will be very short and the twin destinations of Bedwellty House and Georgetown Community Centre will soon be reached. Walkers can freshen up in Bedwellty House before walking to Georgetown where they will enjoy a hospitable breakfast! Tredegar was the home town of the founder of the National Health Service, Aneurin Bevan, and six times world snooker champion, Ray Reardon.
The route will leave Butetown, follow paths that skirt the north of Rhymney before entering the western part of Bryn Bach Country Park. The route will cross the northern slopes of Rhymney Hill and as the sun rises, Tredegar and the Sirhowy Valley will be spread below you. To the north, excellent views of Llangynidir Moor will be enjoyed before it is lost to sight as you descend to the town. Tredegar will have two checkpoints. The baggage checkpoint at Bedwellty House will be visited first. Bedwellty House is a magnificent Regency Villa in grounds that have now become the town park. The house was built by the ironworks owner Samuel Homfray, (the same man who made a bet with Richard Crawshay regarding Richard Trevithick's steam train) in 1818. The baggage checkpoint will have full toilet facilities and be available for entrants to change clothing and wash feet. The breakfast checkpoint is located at Georgetown Community Centre 0.7 miles away.
